May Meeting of the Chicago LUG

Details
Speakers:
Ryan Jarvinen of Red Hat will be speaking on "Open Platforms for Federated Futures". This talk covers popular open standards for identity (open id, persona), authentication (OAuth 1/2), and data (activity feeds,RSS), and will take a look at several new protocols for federated communication (pump.io, diaspora, tent.io, gnu social, etc).
We’ll review the core architectural design shared by many federated social networks, and evaluate several major tradeoffs that one may encounter when using these platforms.
The talk concludes with a live demo where audience members can spin up their own federated community hubs (in minutes).
He'll also discuss decentralized and distributed application design and talk about what we stand to gain from a service-oriented, open web.
Furthering the discussion around Federated Futures, Jim Campbell will be speaking on MediaGoblin internals. This is a timely talk, as MediaGoblin 0.8 is being released this week.
