Collectively, we can harness our talents to not only raise awareness about human trafficking, but also to take action against it. As engaged citizens of the greater Washington, D.C. area – and as part of a larger global community of abolitionists – we can work with law enforcement, government officials and non-governmental organizations to promote a culture where policies are intolerant of slavery and where those impacted by slavery receive the resources needed to start life anew. As Lead Organizer of DC Stop Modern Slavery, I would seek to empower our citizen voice against slavery. We would gather together for monthly meetings in-person and would work together on one specific action per month, joining our voices together to sign a petition or lobby for legislation, for example. I have actively been a member of DC SMS for 2 ½ years -- most recently serving as Director of Communications -- and would consider it an honor to work with you as Lead Organizer.

As a graduate student in psychology with an intense interest in the human rights arena, I have several competitive advantages: years of international travel, multicultural exposure, multi-lingual abilities, and a wide range of experiences, such as working at World Vision, CrisisLink and Free the Slaves. I also spent a summer at an orphanage in Thailand, working closely with victims of trafficking. To address the goals of the DC SMS group, I hope to provide a platform to address two key components: (1) Raise awareness, and (2) Increase Community Engagement. Imagine the possibilities when a community that is close to 1200 member strong is mobilized to take action to end modern day slavery.  This is my vision for this group and I believe we can do it together. I am confident that given the opportunity, I would have an impact and also be impacted by this position at the DC SMS group.
