DC anti-traffcking bill

From: Dan
Sent on: Monday, February 23, 2009, 8:46 PM

Hi all,

We are updating our list of DC SMS members who live in DC and who are up for supporting ?the DC anti-traffcking bill.? Support efforts will entail contacting your Ward Councilmember to urge him or her to vote for the bill and for any helpful additions for the bill.? (We will provide instructions when the time comes on contacting councilmembers).? If you are a DC resident and up for supporting the bill, please let us know what Ward you live in by emailing [address removed].? If you are not sure what Ward you live in you can look it up by typing in your address here: http://citizenatlas.dc.gov/atlasapps/reporthometab.aspx.? Non DC residents will also be able to support the bill as long as they have some connection to DC (e.g. work in the District, are a member of DC SMS etc.).?

??The bill will:

    1. Create a specific human trafficking crime encompassing both labor and sex trafficking.
    2. Ensure access to the Crime Victims Compensation Fund for trafficking victims.
    3. Provide for collection and analysis of trafficking-related statistics in D.C.
    4. Provides for a level of confidentiality of communication between trafficking victims and their caseworkers/counselors.

e.       Create a specific DC level crime against possession of child pornography.

Some things the DC coalition supporting the bill (which includes SMS) would like to get added:

?  Require the posting of national and local anti-trafficking hotline numbers at designated locations (important for the DC SMS hotline campaign).

?  Require law enforcement training and training for other agencies involved in detection or as first responders.

?  Mandate the continuation of the DC Human trafficking task force.?

If you have any questions or want further information regarding the bill, please contact Dan Brook at [address removed].

Thanks very much!

Dan Brook
