Hike Whale Peak in Anza Borrego (intermediate)
Details
Desert views + a little rock scrambling = the perfect Saturday morning. Summit Whale Peak, one of Anza Borrego Desert State Park’s higher mountains, where you can see distant snowcaps and catch the ocotillos while they’re still green!
About the Route
This 8 mile trail offers light rock scrambling, but nothing too crazy! The hike isn’t especially strenuous, but does have some steep sections that require you to climb up and over boulders. Perfect for dipping your toes into rock scrambling and some “off trail” hiking.
Where We’ll Meet
We’ll meet at Blair Valley Campground, then consolidate into high clearance vehicles to drive to the trailhead. We have a capable 8 seater but please leave a comment if you’re able to bring a 4x4 vehicle for others to hitch a ride!
What To Bring
- More water than you think you’ll need! This trail is exposed and arid.
- No dogs—they’re prohibited by Anza Borrego State Park.
- Shoes with good grip for scrambling on boulders.
- Optional: 4x4 vehicle able to drive in soft sand and on rocky terrain. We'll carpool as needed from the campground to the trailhead.
