What we’re about

On a peaceful weekday morning, a group of nature enthusiasts gathered at the Whittier Narrows Nature Center to explore the beauty and biodiversity of the surrounding Natural Area. The walk began with a warm welcome from Charlie Valdez, who introduced the group to the ecological significance of the area and what to expect during the one-mile journey.

As we walked along the scenic trails, we observed native plants in bloom, including white sage, mule fat, and vibrant wildflowers thriving in the open meadows. Charlie shareds insightful facts about the region’s history, its seasonal wildlife patterns, and the critical role this space plays in local conservation.

Birdsong accompanied us throughout the trail as we paused to spot great egrets, red-tailed hawks, and a particularly curious group of black phoebes. We also slowed down near a shaded patch to examine insect habitats and learn about the pollinators that support the local ecosystem.

The walk concluded near the banks of the San Gabriel River, where Charlie led a grounding mindfulness moment—encouraging everyone to take in the sounds, scents, and sensations of nature as a reminder of the healing power of the outdoors.

Participants left feeling refreshed, more connected to nature, and inspired to return. Several commented on how the walk helped reduce their stress and sparked a deeper interest in the native plants and wildlife of the San Gabriel Valley.
