First day of SUMMER visit to MD Great Falls/Olmsted Island

Great way to enjoy the first day of Summer!

Meet at 10:30, KSU 11:00

First stop is Great Falls, VA for lunch at Mookies BBQ (mookiesbbq.com). Then we'll travel to the Maryland side of the Potomac, enter the park and with a 1/4 mile or so flat walk along the C&O canal, cross Olmsted Island for great views of the mighty Potomac and tributaries.

Because we want to spend an unrushed time on the island and also enjoy the Old Tavern Visitor's Center, the ride is a straight shot up Fairfax County Parkway to Georgetown Pike. After lunch, just 2 exits on 495 leads to the MD Great Falls Park. The return trip, with some back roads, is backtracking the way we came. We should be back to our starting point by around 4:00ish, depending on traffic.

You might want to bring sneakers for the walk to the Island. Also water to stay hydrated.

• There is a $15 fee (motorcycle) at the MD parking area, which includes a 3-day pass. No charge if you have a National Parks or Senior Pass.
