Mindful Walk - Sand Spit Beach (MDO)

Details

Join us for a slow-paced mindful walk, some meditation, and essential "vitamin sea" (and hopefully vitamin D) in Montano de Oro that encourages physical and mental health and well-being. The vastness and peacefulness the sand spit has to offer will fill your senses as you explore this special place where the birds far outnumber the people!

No experience with meditation or mindfulness is necessary- simply come with a curious mind and heart. I’ll share guidance and suggestions at the event.

  • Staying consciously, mindfully aware while moving through the environment engages our senses, calms and grounds us—relaxing both mind and body—while deepening our connection to the natural world.
  • We’ll walk mostly in silence to practice connecting to nature mindfully through all of our senses.
  • We'll also have some sitting meditation time, as well as sharing/talking time.

Optional - enjoy some social time, food + beverages, and music at Sea Pines "Barefoot on the Grass" concert series in Los Osos afterwards!

About the Sand Spit: The walk to beach is about a 10ish min walk down a moderate grade to the beach and then a vast stretch of sandy beach with dunes to one side and, of course, ocean to the other. We'll head north towards Morro Rock but not very far. We measure by time, not distance (plan on 2ish hours). This is an out and back walk. The walk back up the dune to the parking lot is steep so we can take it slow and take breaks as needed.

Low tide peaks at 2:38pm so we'll be there as the tide is still going out.

Drive out Pecho Valley Road into Montana de Oro State Park and turn right into the Sandspit day-use area and park at the end of the road. Watch for the signs to the Sand Spit area - it's only part way into the park.

SPOTS ARE LIMITED (20): please sign up if you are committed to attending, or please provide the courtesy of changing your "yes" to a "no" if you change your mind so others can attend in your place. Have guests sign up for meet-up- it's free!

This one is for humans only - no dogs allowed.

Essentials

  • Duration: 2-3ish hours
  • Distance: there is no specific distance or time in mind since we take a slow pace and stop along the way. We'll be out 2-3 hours.
  • Terrain varies: mostly sand except the first part of the path is hard packed from the parking lot

Bring

  • Towel or cushion for sitting time - the ground is usually damp
  • Water
  • Dress in layers for wind, fog, or sun
  • Shoes suitable for sand
  • Insect repellant (it can be buggy on the beach in the spring if there is no breeze)
