I Who Have Never Known Men

In September the Wellington Modern Classics Book Club is reading I Who Have Never Known Men by Jacqueline Harpman, a haunting and philosophical novel of isolation, memory, identity, and what it means to be human.

Set in an unknown future, the novel follows a young woman who has spent her entire life imprisoned underground with thirty-nine other women, watched over by silent guards and cut off from the outside world. After a mysterious event frees them, she must navigate a strange and unfamiliar landscape while searching for answers about her origins, her existence, and the world that came before.

Quiet, unsettling, and deeply thought-provoking, I Who Have Never Known Men explores loneliness, freedom, femininity, human connection, and the fundamental questions of what shapes us when we are separated from society.
