August 2025 Book Club - Huckleberry Finn by Mark Twain

Details
For our August book, we are reading the classic “Huckleberry Finn” by Mark Twain. This is as a prelude to reading the recently published book “James” by Percival Everett, which we intend to read in the future, noting there is a long waiting list for the library copies of that book just now!
Huckleberry Finn is a classic novel that tells the story of a nineteenth-century boy from a Mississippi River town. The book recounts his adventures as he travels down the river with a runaway slave, encountering a family involved in a feud, two scoundrels pretending to be royalty, and Tom Sawyer's aunt who mistakes him for Tom.
Hemingway said that American fiction begins and ends with Huckleberry Finn and for many of us who have never read it, now is our chance. The book delves into issues such as racism, friendship, war, religion, and freedom with an uncanny combination of lightheartedness and gravitas.
If you are coming to the Meet Up, we welcome recommendations for our next book. Come prepared to describe your choice. We like books of short to medium length that will not be too much of a challenge to read in the month or so allotted!
It is important that you please RSVP and cancel if your plans change. If RSVPs are closed, it means we have reached maximum numbers.
