November meet-up: Human-centered data science / Scaling R & Python in the cloud

Details
The next Wellington R User group meeting is finally here!
We are happy to announce talks from Asheel Ramanlal and Nick Snellgrove talking to us about human centred data science and pushing the boundaries in the cloud with R and Python. There will be pizza, and soft drinks after the presentations, sponsored by Epi-interactive.
WHEN:
Thursday, 3rd November 2022, 5.00pm – 6.30pm
WHERE:
Department of Corrections,
Mayfair House, 44-52 The Terrace
IMPORTANT:
We have limited spaces available for the event. Please RSVP if you plan to attend the event; including any guest you might bring. If you register but you can't attend, please remove yourself from the event in Meetup (click "edit RSVP" - choose "Not going"). If you want to bring guests, please ask them to register as well as well as we need to provide an attendee list to the Department who kindly offered to host the event.
Thank you!

ABSTRACTS:
Being a human-centred data scientist at Ara Poutama Aotearoa: the good, the bad, the ugly
Asheel Ramanlal, Department of Corrections
The data science team for Health Services are continually working to find new ways to measure the impacts their programmes have from an oranga & hauora perspective. They are on a journey to become a Kaupapa Māori data service and seeking to bridge the their expertise with the rich Mātauranga Māori amongst key allies. This talk hopes attendees walk away with some sense of the team’s current tech stack; a couple of examples of (static) machine learning projects underway; the current environment they have to navigate to even entertain the idea of health data science with their internal customers; and what an ideal future of health data science at Ara Poutama looks like.
Data visualisation at Scale – how cloud services help us push the boundaries of R & Python in the AIS Explorer
Nick Snellgrove, Epi-interactive
Cloud services like Microsoft Azure or AWS offer powerful features for automation and scaling, which we take full advantage of to support the AIS Explorer, an application we built in collaboration with the University of Minnesota to prevent the spread of aquatic invasive species. With frequent and complex R and Python models running behind the scenes to produce the data, ensuring this application stays up to date and performs well poses a unique challenge. Find out how we use concepts like infrastructure-as-code and on-demand computing alongside services such as auto-scaling, load balancers, event-driven code and cloud storage to keep the AIS Explorer running in top condition!
