Day walk to Orange Hut Maungakotukutuku Valley

Current forecast for Sun is fine weather. This is a different route than the previous trip along Campbell's Mill Rd where there is a new locked gate. Meet at the bottom of Maungakotukutuku Rd. Convoy to the track start at the lower car park. Follow the 4WD road to Orange hut. There is other route we can take back to the cars which means crossing the small Whakatikei river. If up, we won't cross it but return the same way. About 20 km return depending on options taken. Easy travel on a 4WD road but there will be muddy puddles from rain earlier in the week. There is a stream to cross before the car park. Unless you have a high chassis vehicle it may pay to park prior and walk across the small ford.

From Wgtn, exit State Highway 1 at Mackay’s Crossing just north of Paekākāriki. Head north along Emerald Glen then Waterfall Road (unsealed road for 1km) to Valley Road,
