Day walk to Putaputa Bivy Kaitoke
Details
Day trip to Putaputa Bivy. I have been told there are some faint markers on the true right of the Hutt River at Kaitoke, leading to the Putaputa Stream. These were put in by the goat hunters who built the bivy. I have not been this way before so there will need to be some team work, scoping around finding our way. There are bluffs directly above the river so we will need to pick our route slightly above. This is a bush bashing tramp suitable for experienced trampers who like off track navigation routes. I'd really appreciate at least one person who has a GPS system, especially an altimeter to help us keep to a steady height.
Once at Putaputa Stream I know the way following the stream up 1.5 km to the bivy. Wind falls may have occurred making the way slow. Just below the bivy is a waterfall. There is a way up it on the true right. As Chad would tell you, it is rather slippery, so take care otherwise you may take a tumble.
Once at the bivy we will choose our return route. If the way in was straightforward that is the way out. If we experience great difficulty getting in, then we can choose to go out via points 641 and 642. To do this is a big steep climb, and it is a bit longer.
You are responsible for your own safety. Be well prepared for this off track trip. Carry a whistle, torch and emergency blanket along with all your other gear. It's short and sharp about 10km return. Not suitable for beginners.
