**ATTENTION: as at 3 October, we have 1 more place available for this event. If you would like to come, please email the hosts at wellywomenweekends@yahoo.com** As noted in the paragraph above, you will be moved to 'Attending' when we have received your payment.
The Cost – Accommodation is $50. The return ferry crossing is $30.
The Location: Matiu/Somes Island, in Wellington Harbour, is a predator-free scientific reserve. It is also a historic reserve with a rich multicultural history.
Since pests were eradicated the island has become a sanctuary for native plants, birds, reptiles and invertebrates including tuatara, kakariki, North Island robin, little blue penguins and weta.
There is a lighthouse and several easy walking tracks.
If we are lucky, we will get to see the little blue penguins coming back to the island after dark.
What we’ll do: We’ll explore the islands walking tracks and the historical buildings at our leisure. There is also a geocache puzzle and two adventure caches on the island for those who are interested.
We’ll share a pot luck meal on both evenings. Between our main course and dessert we can walk down to the jetty to wait for the little blue penguins to come home for the night.
Getting There: We will take the 11.15am ferry from Queen’s Wharf on Friday and return on Sunday.
The ferry also runs from Day’s Bay to the island, if that is more convenient for any attendees.
The Accommodation: We will be staying at Education House (sleeps 12)
It has four bedrooms – mostly bunks – a full kitchen, a lounge, a bathroom and two toilets.
You will need to bring a sleeping bag or duvet/blanket, a bottom sheet and a pillow case.
Food: There is no food or drink for sale on the island. We have to take everything we want with us (and take our rubbish away when we leave).
We'll share a pot luck meal on Friday and Saturday evenings. Bring something for your own breakfast and lunch and your tea/coffee/juice etc.
The Cost: The booking is for the whole house, not per bed. We divide the cost of the accommodation by the number who are going. For this trip, the cost for the accommodation is $50 per person. If you find you can’t go, there won’t be a refund, but you can sell your space to someone else - you must offer it to anyone on the Meetup waitlist first.
You will also need to buy your ticket for the ferry crossing on the day to go. The cost is $30 return.
