This meetup is intended for those at a beginner or intermediate level.

## IT'S ONLINE

Due to COVID-19, we will be meeting online until further notice.

Unfortunately, there are some limitations with signing on webcam versus in-person, but we will try our best and stay safe!

We will be using Google Meet. Open the meeting URL in any modern browser. There's no need to download an app or sign up for an account on desktop; you may need an app on a mobile device.

Some tips for an optimal online Meetup experience:

* It works best with Chromium-based browsers, so use Chrome or Chromium or Edge if possible.
* Use high-speed internet. You might want to try wired internet if possible, or find a good wi-fi spot.
* Ensure you have good bright lighting and are lit from the front.
* Make sure your webcam is positioned to capture you and your signing space. That means your head should be pretty close to the top of the frame!
* Make your camera steady! Rest your device on a table or something else solid, rather than your lap.
* Make sure "tile view" is on so you can see all participants at the same time. You can find this option in the toolbar at the bottom; it looks like four squares in a grid.
* You can use the chat feature to get someone's attention, or to get a message across if you are having trouble signing it.
* Mute your microphone.

## WHO CAN ATTEND?

Deaf, Hard-of-hearing (HOH), hearing... anyone who wants to practise ASL.

All levels welcome, but please at least be familiar with fingerspelling. Here is a good site to get started learning the ASL alphabet: https://www.lifeprint.com/asl101/fingerspelling/index.htm

If you're well beyond the beginner level, remember that this meetup is intended mainly for those at a beginner or intermediate level -- if you're advanced please slow right down and be prepared to patiently fingerspell or otherwise explain the meaning of any signs which aren't understood by everyone. If that doesn't sound fun, come to the intermediate/advanced meetups instead.

## THIS IS NOT A CLASS

There are no teachers, but we can still learn a lot from each other, and especially Deaf attendees.

## WHAT TO EXPECT

It really depends on how many people attend and their level.

We will be voice-off for the duration of the meetup. If you are having trouble getting a particular thought across, you can write on paper if you like.

Here are some examples of things we might do:

* Chat
* Practise storytelling
* Quiz each other on signs/fingerspelling
* Play ASL games

Please please do interrupt and ask for the meanings of signs! We are all here to practise, and won't mind signing a sentence again, and getting the added practice of explaining the meaning.
