Dogs and headless horsemen welcome! 🐴🐶 Remember to bring a headlight or torch 🔦 as will be dark. Walk is a steady 2 miles and will be done in an hour.

Ghoulish fancy dress optional of course 🧟‍♂️

To join, please pay £1 on the night or preferably beforehand via this link: https://www.paypal.me/aac007 Please choose friends & family option only

History and Background

  • Original Purpose: The bridge and its dramatic, steep cutting were commissioned by the Earl or Duke of Bridgewater (owner of the nearby Ashridge House estate) in the 18th century.

  • The Sunken Lane: The straight medieval/Roman road connecting Frithsden to Nettleden was deliberately excavated and lowered into a hollow way with flint-lined walls.

  • Social Seclusion: Local lore states the Duke sank the road so that estate owners and nobility could travel across the grounds or use the carriage drive without having to look at or make contact with local peasant workers and villagers.

Folklore and Hauntings

  • Spooky Lane Legends: True to its nickname, the location is heavily tied to local paranormal tales, with visitors reporting a creepy atmosphere, sudden drops in temperature, and a lack of mobile phone reception.

  • Apparitions: Local folklore claims the path is haunted by a silent, robed monk walking toward a nearby monastery, or a spectral Roman centurion guarding the old road.

  • Occult Activity: Graffiti, chalked pentagrams, and occult symbols have occasionally been reported on the interior tunnel walls, fueling modern urban legends about witchcraft

Afterwards, for those that want to, we can go back to The Alford Arms for drinks and maybe a bite to eat 🍔🥘🍺🍷
