The Magnificent Seven cemeteries walk series- East London duo
SE1 9SP, London SE1 9SP, UK, London, GB11 miles Moderate Liner
This is the first of four planned walks visiting the magnificent seven Victorian London cemeteries. The first of the series will include visiting the two in East London - Tower Hamlets and Abney Park (Stoke Newington)
We will meet at 10.00 outside the Hotel Chocolat shop at London Bridge mainline station, which is on the left hand side of the concourse as you go through the barriers.
Starting with a scenic walk along the Thames from London Bridge, through St Katherine's Docks to Limehouse and then hugging the Regent's Canal until we reach Mile End. Passing close by to two interesting museums- the Ragged School Museum and the Vagina Museum, which unfortunately we won't have time to visit...
After briefly dropping into Tower Hamlets Cemetery (https://fothcp.org/), we make our way to the scenic Victoria Park where there is a great cafe, toilets and sourdough bread for sale!
We then continue through some suburban parts of East London and can appreciate how trendy Stoke Newington has become, before we finish at Abney Park Cemetery (https://abneypark.org/) which provides a wild, gothic, and atmospheric end to the day. Plenty of cafes and bars available here too, and easy return travel.
This is a no dog walk.NB: There is a £2 payment required for non-Ramblers Assoc. members to help cover our Meetup costs. Please help the walk leader by bringing the exact change.

Albury Downs and St. Marthas Hill in the Surrey Hills
GU4 8SE, Newland's Corner, Guildford GU4 8SE, UK, Guildford, GB8 miles/12.9km Ascent 1280ft/390m circular Moderate
From the starting point on the Albury Downs near Guildford - part of the North Downs Way and one of its finest viewpoints - this walk twice descends below the crest of the downs and twice climbs to regain it.
Open download interspersed with frequent attractive wooded stretches makes for a good, varied walk with extensive views from the highest points at Newlands Corner and St. Martha's church (often described as the finest viewpoint in Surrey).
Of the the two climbs the first one that ascends St. Martha's Hill is quite steep and strenuous; the second that returns to the start is more gradual.
The walk is a leisurely pace to enjoy the views throughout and allows some time to visit the church.
Please bring a picnic lunch.
There is an additional toilet stop and pop up coffee stop which may be open (but not guaranteed)
Join us for a drink at a local pub afterwards.Fun Facts
St. Marthas Church is only accessible by foot
Agatha Christie disappeared on 3 December 1926 after leaving her home in Sunningdale, Berkshire. The next day, her abandoned car was found near Newlands Corner the starting point point for this walk.
She remained missing for 11 days before being discovered at the Swan Hydropathic Hotel (now the Old Swan Hotel) in Harrogate, North Yorkshire, where she had checked in under the name "Teresa (or Theresa) Neele", the surname of her husband's mistress.
The mystery has never been fully explained. Christie later claimed to have suffered amnesia and never publicly gave a detailed account of what happened during those eleven days.Subject to walk leaders approval we allow well-behaved dogs under full control of their owner. If you wish to bring your dog on the walk, please check with the walk leader before arriving for the walk.
