East Branch of the Black River: Friday, leave Onaway SP Campground at 9:04am, meet at launch site at 9:50 and unload boats, 10:05AM Shuttle vehicles, 11:01AM Paddles in following safety talk and group photo.
There is a section of faster water about a 1/4 of the way into the paddle, it's hard to say what it looks like now. Typically you've needed to be able to steer your boat, hold position, eddy out, etc. In past years it has been technical and tight, but it also changes year to year.
The East Branch of the Black River through this section is remote and runs through the Black River Ranch a large private tract of wilderness, where we have to stay on the river. There are some shallow stretches and navigating the deepest channel in the river will challenge your river reading skills, the river gains depth as you go down river. You will encounter sweepers and a few strainers along the way with current at about 3.5 miles per hour so there are no real hazardous parts in this paddle. There will probably be lift overs and or a portage or two, but we have information that a crew of people have gone down the river and cut a path. The scenery is spectacular in this pristine section of river.
The trip will cover approximately 10 miles and should take about 4 hours including a lunch stop. We will take out at Clark's Bridge.
Volunteers for shuttle drivers are highly appreciated, and earn the "Guide" title in your profile. (please text Kristina to remind her) Once the drivers return, we will provide a safety brief, then do a group photo before anyone goes on the river.
Please remember you are responsible for your own safety.
- PFD Required
- Dry clothes, in a dry bag and some in your vehicle optional but recommended
- we enjoy our alcoholic beverages off-river only due to safety and other concerns. Please respect the event host (It's awkward approaching someone mid-trip) and the clubs position on this matter. We’ll enjoy one with you after the trip.
- We leave on time to make sure that those who have to drop out with out contacting us can do so. We also can't wait for those who will be running late to keep the paddle in order. Please be on time or early.
- We leave together after the safety talk and picture. Please remain on land until the host has completed their duties in this regard.
Your event host is authorized to accept donations that help keep WMKC running smoothly.
