Towards the north of the park, on a rise, is the copper horse statue. From there, the 4km Long Walk, an iconic tree lined path, slopes downhill to Windsor Castle, besides the Thames.
Virginia Water Lake was originally little more than a stream. During World War II, the lake was drained, as its obvious shape provided enemy guidance at night to Windsor and other important military targets in the area. It has been used by the crews for the Harry Potter films for lakeside scenes.
The Cascade, or Waterfall, is also notable. It was constructed from stones brought from Bagshot Heath. They are rumoured to be the remains from a Saxon settlement. From the Cascade a stream runs through a glen and ultimately enters the Thames at Chertsey. By the side of the Cascade, immense stones are arranged to form a cavern known as 'The Robber's Cave'.
Walk description
Distance: 7 - 8 miles
Grading: Easy no steep hills, flat path all the way
Rating: 2 out of 10
Ascent: 189m
Walk time: About 4.5 to 6.5 hours of actual walk/stroll, depending how fast we walk and how many of us.
On my first trip during Covid there were 30 of us, it took 6 hours to arrive to Windsor due to the size and lack of exercise as a result of being cooped up at home for way too long, we had a few breaks along the way while others caught up with us. Recently with a smaller group of 15 to 20 it took us 4 hours.
There will be 2 or 3 10 to 15 minutes break during our walk, as well as a 30 minutes lunch break where we can have a picnic on the grass. On our arrival to Winsor, you can opt to break up into small groups, a chance for some to visit the castle, this will cost extra to enter, there is a shopping centre, and several eateries joints, or some may wish to walk along the River Thames path etc.
This will be the 5th time i have organised this walk and we always end up at Lebanese Night which i discovered on my first visit. A restaurant severing delicious halal food and the price is quite reasonable too, check out website for details and menu Lebanese Nights Windsor, Berkshire SL4 1PR - Menu, Reviews (94), Photos (20) - Restaurantji
