Loop - Moorland Hike @ Goathland (Heartbeat/Hogsmeade) - N.Y Moors - 13mi/20.5km

Details

Join us for a hike in the North York Moors when the heather should be in its full glorious pink bloom. Goathland is the village that was featured in the 90's soap opera, Heartbeat and also the train station used for Hogsmeade in the Harry Potter films. I do believe it was also used in a recent Mission Impossible film too.

Start Time: 9:45am
Miles/Kilometres: 13mi/20.5km (Approx)
Total ascent: 365m (Approx)
Difficulty: Hard (due to distance)
Estimated length of time: 6 hours (including a lunch break)
Dogs Allowed: Yes but must be on a lead at all times on moorland.
Public Transport: No. Happy to give people a lift from Halifax, Brighouse or Leeds city centre.
Parking: Main car park - https://maps.app.goo.gl/rV4Fd8usmna77WkH8. There looks to be a field opened next to it too but likely cash only to park there.
Payment: £1 for the walk - Use this link to pay: https://settleup.starlingbank.com/jamiepope1 - please put "Goathland" as reference.

Itinerary

Meet across the road from the Goathland Hotel outside the gift shop, where you can get a coffee if you wish. We start by walking down the main road to the station. We can pause here for people to take photos of Hogsmeade station if they wish. Once ready we continue down the road under the railway and then follow the Inn Way north alongside the railway. We then veer off until we come to Darnholme Lane.

We walk along the road until it ends and then head up the hillside through the ferns and heather onto the moors until we come out onto Beck Hole Road. We walk along this country road across the moors, cross over Cow Wath Bank and then the A169. We now follow a dirt track across the moors, passing a forest plantation until the tracks turn into a footpath.

We follow the footpath south across the moors to the Stony Leas trigpoint. Where we can stop for lunch. Once ready we continue until we join the Lyke Wake Walk footpath. We descend down to Eller Beck and walk through this valley back to the A169. Crossing over it again and continue to follow the Lyke Wake Walk path as it ascends up to the Simon's Howe trigpoint.

We now rejoin the Inn Way and follow it across Goathland Moor passing a tarn as it descends back down to Goathland. We follow follow the main road back to the village, where any fans of Heartbeat can take pictures of the shops and Post Office that were used in the TV show. We can then find a pub for some food & drink before heading home.
