Itinerary
Meet outside the station. Seems like a tiny station so don't count on there being toilets. We walk down Wood Lane and turn immediately onto a footpath that cuts through woodland to Wood Nook. We walk briefly up A636 and turn onto Normanton Road. We wiggle through housing estates to get out of Denby Dale; down Dearneside Road, up The Meadows, there's a footpath through the houses to Inkerman Way. Its then another footpath through the houses here to the A635.
We cross over and take footpaths through fields to the edge of Upper Denby. We come out onto the B6115 and walk up this road for approx 0.5mi/0.8km. We turn off onto a footpath through fields and then down a farm road, passing through Gunthwaite Hall Farm. We walk down another footpath that used to be a road until it comes out onto a country road called New Road.
We walk along this road briefly until we can take a footpath passing cottages, through fields and woodland until we come out onto North Lane. We cross over this and carry on along the footpath through fields to South Lane. It is then along this road for approx 0.5mi/0.8km until we can veer off onto a farm road. We walk along here, passing the farm until we come out onto Woolstocks Lane. Walk down this road briefly and turn off onto another farm road and cut through another farm, through more fields until we come out onto the A635.
We cross over and make our way through the village of Cawthorne via its church to a road called Tivy Dale. Walk down this road briefly until we can turn onto one called The Parks which turns into a footpath that leads to a bridge across a large pond and into the Cannon Hall Country Park. We will walk alongside the pond around the edge of the park to the car park. Through the car park, where there is a coffee shop we can stop off at if we wish - if busy there's another one up the hill. Its then an easy ascent up to Cannon Hall Farm.
We exit the country park via footpaths onto New Road. Cross over and take footpaths through Deffer Woods woodland to Bogden Lane, we walk down here briefly and then take footpaths to Bogden Hall Hotel. Its then down a country road passing Clough Hall Lodge, then one more footpath through fields and up Cuckstool Lane to the A636. Then we walk down the main road back into Denby Dale to find a pub for food & drink.
