Itinerary

Meet in the green space opposite Mathilde's Cafe, behind the Little Inn. We start by heading up the road at the side of Emma's Deli for a short period until can veer off onto a footpath around the hillside to Easdale Road. We follow the footpath adjacent to the road, then down the road briefly until turning right onto another road (has no name). Then we walk along this country road for about a mile to a T junction. Turn left at the junction and walk along a bit more road passing two farms until the road turns into a footpath.

At this point we've done 80m of elevation spanning 1.75mi/2.8km so extremely easy. The only real ascent of the hike starts now, we hike up to the top of Steel Fell - Wainright #1 (553m). The ascent is approx 400m spanning 1.25mi/2km so it will be steep. But once up, we should get great views looking up Thrilmere and the back of Helvellyn.

Once ready we descend 80m, then its flat around the north side of the small Greenburn dale before a 60m ascent up to Calf Crag - Wainright #2 (537m). We then walk along the ridge (not narrow - quite wide but rocky) with Greenburn on oneside and Far Easdale the otherside. Gradually descending down to Gibson Knott - Wainright #3 (420m). We continue descending along the ridge to Bracken Hause (a crossroads of sorts) before the last small bit of ascent up to Helm Crag (pictured) - Wainright #4 (405m). We can then continue on to the rocky part pictured for views across Grasmere, Grasmere Lake, Rydal Lake and perhaps even see parts of Lake Windermere.

The walk ends with a steep descent down to Easedale Road, we walk down here until we are back to where we were on it before at the start. We either retrace our steps around the hill or stick to the road and follow it into Grasmere. We can then find a pub for food & drink before heading home. If you did not get any famous gingerbread before the hike started then the famous gingerbread shop shuts at 16:30 so should still be open by the time we finish.
