Loop - Great Whernside from Kettlewell - Yorkshire Dales - 8mi/13km
Details
A lovely hill walk from the picturesque village of Kettlewell in the Yorkshire Dales. Great Whernside (ironically not quite as high as the plain old regular Whernside that forms a part of the Yorkshire Three Peaks Challenge) stands at 704m tall, making it the sixth highest peak in the Dales and also forms one of the lesser known Wharfedale Three Peaks.
We'll meet at the Dales National Park Kettlewell Car Park and begin the ascent a short 5 minute amble from there. It's a pretty steep ascent (though rest assured there's no scrambling) to begin with before it calms down a little and becomes more gradual with a few flat sections. It's around 4.5 miles to the top and the trig point and from there it's a continuous (though relatively gradual) descent back to the village.
Getting here is rather tricky by public transport so I'd just recommend either driving or requesting a lift from one of the many willing (and friendly) members of the group.
