Having done this trip two years ago and thoroughly enjoyed it, we’re excited to return! Join us on a backpacking adventure through Joyce Kilmer Wilderness that promises a journey immersed in natural beauty and rugged terrain. The focal point of this trek is the Naked Ground Trail, which serves as the gateway to an array of breathtaking vistas and pristine wilderness.

- Difficulty: About 3400 elevation gain on the first day.
- Total miles: 13+ miles
- Total ascent: 4,331 ft
- First Day: 6 miles, 3400 ft ascent, 300 ft descent, 3-4 hours
- Second Day: 7 miles, 400 ft ascent, 3500 ft descent, 3-4 hours
- Campsite: Bob Bald Elev 5263 ft
- Trails: Naked Ground, Stratton Bald Trail, Haoe Lead, Jenkins Meadow Trail
- Parking: Don't park at the Joyce Kilmer Loop parking area but at the Jenkins Meadow Trailhead & Joyce Kilmer Overnight Parking. Here is the GPS: N35° 21.744' W83° 55.305'
Additional
- Bear Safety: Bear cans are recommended for storing food. Bear bags can be used but trees are not close to the campsite.
- Water Availability: There an active spring (35.37067, -84.00054) near the campsite but it's not guaranteed. Be prepared to go downhill if necessary.
- Hiking Precautions: Hiking in groups is recommended for safety. Be sure to be familiar with the trails and capable of navigating independently in case of separation.
- Accommodation: Tents are recommended due to potential windy conditions and limited suitable trees for hammocks on Bob Bald. But there are trees a few hundred feet away.
- Optional Activity: At the end of the trip, there's the option to hike the Joyce Kilmer Loop, a 2-mile trail through one of the few virgin forests in the US, featuring 450 yr old, poplar trees. It could be a nice addition to the trip for those interested in exploring more.
Day 1: Naked Ground Trail to Bob Bald
- Start hiking the Naked Ground Trail at 9:00 AM.
- The journey begins with the trailhead of Naked Ground Trail, where hikers are greeted by a dense canopy of towering trees and the sweet melody of birdsong.
- As you ascend along the trail, the forest gradually opens up, revealing sweeping panoramas of the surrounding mountains and valleys.
- After a challenging but rewarding hike, reach the stunning Bob Bald, a vast expanse of grassy meadows offering unobstructed views of the surrounding landscape.
- Set up camp amidst the serene beauty of Bob Bald, where the night sky unveils a dazzling display of stars, far from the city lights.
Day 2: Bob Bald to Hangover and Jenkins Meadows Trail
- Wake up to the crisp mountain air and the promise of another day filled with adventure. After breakfast, break camp and prepare for the day's journey.
- Hike from Bob Bald towards The Hangover, a prominent rocky outcrop offering unparalleled vistas of the wilderness below. Marvel at the sheer beauty of the landscape stretching as far as the eye can see.
- Continuing the trek, follow the Haoe Lead trail towards Jenkins Meadows, where lush greenery and babbling brooks provide a serene backdrop for exploration.
- As the day draws to a close, trace our steps back to the starting point, reflecting on the memories made and the wonders witnessed during this unforgettable backpacking excursion.
- Arrive back at cars around 1:00 PM - 2:00 PM.
