Event Overview
Join us for a scenic 10.6-mile overnight backpacking trip in the beautiful Shining Rock Wilderness. This route features sweeping mountain views, open balds, and a visit to the quartz formations of Shining Rock.
We’ll hike sections of the Art Loeb Trail, crossing Black Balsam Knob and Tennent Mountain before camping near Shining Rock Gap. A great trip for those looking for big views and a rewarding overnight adventure.

Meetup Details
8:15 AM: Recommended arrival (parking fills quickly at this popular trailhead)
8:45 AM: Group meetup
9:00 AM: Begin hiking
This is a high-traffic area, and campsites fill up fast—arriving early helps ensure both parking and good campsite options.

Day 1 – Hike In
Start from the trailhead and take Trail #108 (Big East Fork Trail)
Connect to the Art Loeb Trail (#146)
Hike southbound over:
Black Balsam Knob
Tennent Mountain
Descend to Ivestor Gap
Continue to Shining Rock Gap
Set up camp in designated backcountry sites

Optional Evening Hike
After setting up camp, we’ll take a short hike to Shining Rock for sunset views (optional but highly recommended).

Day 2 – Return
Take Little East Fork Trail (#107)
Turn left onto Ivestor Gap Trail (#101)
At Ivestor Gap, continue straight on Ivestor Gap Trail (#101)
Follow back to the parking area
