About
Join us for a fall overnight backpacking trip into the Black Mountains, home to several of the highest peaks in the eastern United States. We'll hike the scenic Colbert Ridge Trail to Deep Gap, establish camp, and spend time exploring portions of the famous Black Mountain Crest.
This trip is designed to be challenging but enjoyable. The climb to the crest is steep and rewarding, but the overall mileage is moderate. We'll maintain a steady pace while taking time to enjoy the scenery, fall color, and high-elevation forests.

This trip is intended for experienced backpackers who are comfortable carrying a full backpack during a sustained mountain climb. Participants should be capable of navigating independently if separated from the group.

Meeting Location: Colbert Ridge Trailhead

Please arrive by 8:30 AM or earlier so we can organize the group and begin hiking at approximately 9:00 AM.
The trailhead has a gravel parking area with limited spaces. Arriving early is strongly recommended.

Itinerary
Day 1 – Saturday
We'll begin hiking from the Colbert Ridge Trailhead and make the steady climb to Deep Gap where we'll establish camp.
After camp is set up, those who would like additional mileage are welcome to join me for an optional hike farther along the Black Mountain Crest. The turnaround point will depend on daylight, weather, trail conditions, and the group's pace.
We'll plan to return to camp in time to enjoy sunset around 6:50 PM from the Black Mountain Crest, weather permitting.
Estimated Mileage: 5–7 miles (including optional hiking)

Day 2 – Sunday
Early risers may want to enjoy sunrise around 7:15 AM from the Black Mountain Crest before breakfast.
After breakfast we'll continue exploring the Black Mountain Crest before returning to Deep Gap, packing up camp, and descending the Colbert Ridge Trail back to the trailhead.
Our route and turnaround point will be based on group pace, weather, and trail conditions.
Estimated Mileage: 5–6 miles
We should finish during the early to mid-afternoon.

Water
Water is generally available near Deep Gap, but sources can vary depending on recent rainfall. Everyone should have enough carrying capacity for camp and the dry stretches along the crest. All backcountry water must be filtered or treated before drinking.

Important Notes

  • Food must be stored properly to prevent attracting bears and other wildlife.
  • Primitive backcountry camping with no facilities.
  • Bring your normal backpacking shelter.
  • Weather above 6,000 feet can change quickly. Be prepared for wind, rain, and cool overnight temperatures.
  • We will hike together as a group, but every participant should be capable of navigating independently and be self-sufficient.
  • This trip is intended for experienced backpackers with above-average fitness.
  • Well-behaved dogs are welcome but should be under control at all times.
  • Please practice Leave No Trace principles and pack out everything you bring in.
  • This trip will generally proceed in light rain. Severe weather may require changes to the itinerary or cancellation.
