What we’re about

"Human understanding is marvellously enlightened by daily conversation with [other people], for we are, otherwise, compressed and heaped up in ourselves, and have our sight limited to the length of our own noses." - Michel de Montaigne

Finding a place to have discussions about intellectually oriented topics can be difficult these days.  This group is for exactly that!

Discussions will be based on ideas, and sources for these will come from articles, books, podcasts, videos, and films.

Topics will be eclectic and wide-ranging: ideally a mix of the sciences, the humanities, the arts, and current events.

Please note: A priority of the group is a rational (reason-based) approach (scientific and/or critical thinking). Our members are people who have considered opinions but aren't dogmatic about them, people who are open-minded and able to talk about opinions that differ from their own in a collaborative way.  If you think you’d like to join this group, please do!  Though topics can be about substantial stuff, we do have fun discussing them!!

Meetings of the group will always take place on the weekend, and always in a public location like a cafe/pub/restaurant.

This is a private group with limited membership, to allow members to become familiar with each other.  And, we always welcome new members!!

If you’re interested, please be sure there's a realistic photo of yourself. And please answer these questions, which will appear when you click on the ‘request to join’ button:

  1. Please list three non-fiction books or articles you’ve read recently (please be specific).
  2. Please list three podcasts, videos or films that you've found interesting (please be specific).
  3. Where do you get your news?
  4. What's your opinion of science?
  5. What sorts of topics do you most like to talk about?

As an aside, for the past several years Meetup has steadily increased Organizer fees. It currently stands at $358 annually. To help cover these costs, the organizer is kindly asking members to make a $12 contribution (or whatever you think you can afford) twice a year: sometime in October, and in April.
Please make your contribution via Venmo: Michael WID @IdeasDiscussion

Thanks to all for your support and continued participation!
