What Is Moral Courage? As Alyssa Burgart, MD, MA writes:
“It’s not about grand gestures. It’s about integrity in action.”
Dr. Burgart describes herself as a “Doctor Navigating Ethics & Culture in the House of Medicine. Practicing board-certified Pediatric Anesthesiologist & Bioethicist.” It seems that within the past year she started a substack blog that she calls The Moral Injury Clinic, as a support for people who are going through this. Within the field of clinical medicine during the last few years, moral injury has come to be recognized as the psychological & sometimes physical effects on a person of being forced to do something that they feel is morally wrong. And it is known to play a large role in professional burn-out. For our discussion let’s start by reading Alyssa Burgart’s description, which is general and would apply to most situations: What Is Moral Courage?

Then let’s watch (on your own sometime before the meeting) a 2022 Chilean movie that intimately depicts an example of moral courage, Chile ’76, directed by Manuella Martelli and starring Aline Kuppenheim. The film (in Spanish w/ subtitles) is “an intriguing historical noir” that “builds from quiet character study to gripping suspense thriller”. It is available for streaming on Kanopy (the FREE public library online film streaming site), as well as Fandango at Home, Amazon Prime, Apple TV, and others:
