About us
A relaxed evening with snacks and beverages to learn about some of the latest (mostly marine for now) biodiversity research and conservation efforts happening in Thailand today! Various practitioners and experts from a variety of backgrounds will share the good, the bad and the beautiful of the latest in biodiversity documentation and conservation across Thailand.
We're happy to present events with a series of short talks, friendly discussion and QnA to bring the wilderness a little closer to home.
If you are the kind of nerd like us, and things like TED talks feel like fun, not homework, this may be for you!
- Topics range from new species discoveries and new habitats being studied, to species at risk and the complex interactions in the natural world.
- Speakers will always be a mix of Thai and non-Thai specialists but chats and presentations will be in English.
- Our cosy venues range from cocktail bars to cafes and more, often with a wide selection of food, beverages and other consumables! Check out the event details to see where the next one will be! To encourage a relaxed conversation, we are hoping to keep events relatively small.
- The talks and discussion are aimed at a non-academic, non-technical audience! However, the themes may occasionally touch on sensitive topics and the space is also a bar so we are keeping attendance to adults
- Events are totally free but we encourage grabbing a drink and a snack to support the team! If you'd like to support any of the organisations or researchers doing this work, you're welcome to do so but this is not a requirement!

So, if you haven't yet heard, the next giant El Niño is incoming. What used to be a roughly decadal cycle has now hit in 2016, 2020, 2024 and 2026/27. Each one brings with it climatic chaos on land and in the sea.
Yes, yes it's depressing. This one aspect of human-induced climate change that has been the cause of thousands of kilometers of coral reefs disappearing across the globe, including in Thailand. However, this thermal Voldemort of coral reefs everywhere did not account for the persistence and adaptation of some corals and some coral conservationists.
Join us to hear from some coral biologists, active across Thai reefs, about how some corally humans and reefs are refusing to give in.
A few short talks talks with cocktails, before a nerdy discussion with the following speakers:
- Dr. Mathinee Yucharoen (Coastal Oceanography and Climate Change Research Center - COCC, Prince of Songkla University)
- Dr. Rahul Mehrotra (Aow Thai Marine Ecology Center, ATMEC, Love Wildlife Foundation)
- Dr. Lalita Putchim (Thai Department of Marine and Coastal Resources, DMCR)
- Mr. Gavin Miller (Global Reef)
This in-person only event will run from 7pm to 9pm and is an easy 5 minute walk from BTS Phra Khanong. The event is free though of course we ask you support our host venue by trying something from their cocktail/mocktail menu, Spaces are limited to allow for easy participation from all so confirm quick!
Wasteland is a bar that prides itself on blending the creativity of cocktails with a scientific approach towards environmental sustainability. We can attest, having tasted over half their menu over the past year, the blend is absolutely working!
