Basic Navigation for the Kayaker
This fun and informative workshop is something you only get at a paddling symposium so we're lucky to be able to offer this to our
Wet Dog members.
Description: This event is designed to be fun and make you feel more confident on the water by possessing these useful paddling as well as life skills.
We'll gather up at our friends at Sweetwater located on Gandy Blvd in St. Pete for a workshop on the fundamentals of navigation. Terry Hobbs of Severn Kayaking and Carolina Mike will host this workshop upstairs in Sweetwater Kayaks.
We'll do a short ice breaker and then go over a brief history of navigation. You'll learn - what a magnetic compass is, the difference between True North vs Magnetic North, Variation, Deviation, Course, Heading, Bearing, Tides and Tidal Theory, Earth and Sun Effect, Spring Tides and Neap Tides. These are all very useful in paddling as well as hiking, biking and light trekking. Note: We will not be using any modern devices. This will all be hand drawn as if you were in a kayak with a chart. Beginners and up welcome. Approx 3 hrs workshop.
This is a two part workshop 1st part is on land and the 2nd part is on the water near Fort Desoto on June 29th. This will be posted in a separate meetup. Note: You do not have to attend both workshops, but to attend the second you must attend the first.
