About us

Wheezy Wanderers

You don’t need perfect lungs, unlimited PTO, or a huge travel budget to see the world. You just need the right people to go with.

Wheezy Wanderers is a travel and social group built around people with asthma, breathing and respiratory issues, allergies, sinus problems, exercise-induced breathing issues, and similar conditions that can make traditional group travel a little more complicated.

We’re still capable. We still want adventure. We just travel a little differently.

What is Wheezy Wanderers?

This is not a traditional support group, and it’s definitely not a group about letting health issues keep us home.

It’s for people who want to travel, explore new places, meet new people, and have great experiences, but would rather do it with people who understand what it’s like when your lungs occasionally have other plans.

Maybe you’ve avoided a group hike because you’re worried about slowing everyone down. Maybe you’ve wondered what would happen if your asthma flared up halfway through an excursion. Maybe air quality, altitude, pollen, allergies, heat, cold, or just a rough breathing day can change what you’re able to do.

Or maybe you’re perfectly capable of traveling, but you’d simply feel better doing it with people who get it.

That’s us.

Need to stop and catch your breath? Cool.

Want to sit out an activity and meet everyone for dinner later? No problem.

Having a rough day and want to head back to the hotel? You won’t be made to feel like you’re ruining everyone else’s trip.

And if half the group wants to go skiing while the other half would rather hang out at the lodge with hot chocolate, that’s a perfectly successful Wheezy Wanderers trip.

The goal isn’t to make travel boring or overly cautious. The goal is to make adventure work for us instead of constantly trying to make ourselves fit someone else’s definition of adventure.

What We’re Planning

We’re starting locally, getting to know each other, building an actual community, and then hitting the road.

Our goal is to have monthly social meetups and local activities, plus two larger trips each year:

One medium trip: Target budget of $500 or less per person.

One big trip: Target budget of $1,000 or less per person.

Those are targets, not hard limits. Some adventures may run a little higher depending on flights, hotels, destinations, and activities. But affordable travel is an important part of what we’re building.

Think long weekends, road trips, national parks, cruises, beach trips, ski weekends, new cities, scenic adventures, international trips, and whatever else the group comes up with.

We’re much more interested in seeing an incredible place than proving we got there the hardest possible way.

The Community

The monthly meetups matter just as much as the trips.

We’ll grab coffee, get food, check out local events, hit a haunted house, take an easy hike, hang out at a bar, plan future adventures, or just get together and talk.

Because when we eventually book that bigger trip, the goal isn’t to travel across the world with a bunch of strangers from the internet.

It’s to travel with friends.

We’re building a community of independent adults who take responsibility for themselves and their health, but who also look out for one another.

Nobody needs to apologize for needing a break.

Nobody gets embarrassed for pulling out an inhaler.

Nobody has to pretend they’re feeling great when they’re not.

And nobody has to prove how tough they are just to belong.

Who Is This For?

Asthma is at the heart of Wheezy Wanderers.

We’re also welcoming to people dealing with asthma-adjacent respiratory issues, breathing limitations, significant allergies, sinus issues, exercise-induced breathing problems, and similar challenges who understand the kind of travel community we’re trying to create.

You don’t need to be an athlete.

You don’t need to be an experienced traveler.

And you don’t need to be sick enough to consider yourself disabled.

You just need to be capable of taking responsibility for yourself, interested in actually getting out into the world, and willing to extend the same patience and consideration to everyone else.

We’re not waiting for perfect health. We’re not waiting until we’re rich. We’re going anyway.

Come wheeze with us.
