Malware Analysis with WICCA & VU StudSec

Details

WICCA puts on her academic hat and journeys to the VU Amsterdam to talk about...
Malware analysis!
with Asia Slowinska

Our partners at StudSec invite us over into their world of binary searches for a presentation titled "Binary and Malware (Anti-) Analysis and Beyond," focusing on research in the field of binary and malware analysis from one of their professors. There will also be discussions on academic opportunities in the Master's in Computer Security program at the VU.

--- Speaker ---

Asia Slowinska is a Systems Security Researcher, with one foot in industry, and the other in academia. As a Chief Scientist at Ioli Labs, she leads technological development and research-related initiatives, while shaping the company's technology vision. As an Assistant Professor in the Systems and Network Security Group at the VU Amsterdam, she conducts research into improving the security of software and operating systems. Owing to her unique combination of both industrial and academic experience, she hopes to foster further communication and collaboration, and eventually make the world a safer place.

Her research interests span across several aspects of security, including systems and applications security, and binary analysis. She received her PhD from the VU Amsterdam in 2012 and her dissertation was awarded the Roger Needham award for best PhD thesis in Computer Systems in Europe in 2012. In the period of 2015-2022, Asia pursued a successful career in the industry -- as a Security Architect in the IBM Security Systems Netherlands Lab, she helped IBM customers keep their mainframe systems secure and compliant. Her solutions have been highly influential in the field, led the community to reconsider core assumptions on a popular technique to analyze binaries, and inspired lots of follow-on work.

--- StudSec ---

VU StudSec in a (unofficial) CyberSecurity Association within VU Amsterdam dedicated to lowering the barrier to entry in the CyberSecurity field. This mission is carried out by hosting workshops and tutorials regarding various sectors of cybersecurity in combination with constant mentoring from professionals in the field. Their objective is to provide a platform for students to learn and grow in the field of CyberSecurity.

--- Program ---

The talk will last for approximately 1 hour, but with time for walk-in and pizza, we expect the entire event to last around 2 hours (from 6-8).
