Wed One - Women in Sports Media
·OnlineOnlineWe all watch women sports as recent viewing statistics attest. Here is your chance to hear from women documenting the athletes, their stories, and sharing their behind the scenes lessons.
Panelists Include:
Kayona Ebony Brown is a 2x Emmy Award-winning filmmaker best known for her work with sport-centered and female-driven stories, which notably includes the Super Bowl feature, Before Jackie, starring Viola Davis––the forgotten story of how the NFL was integrated. In her role as a writer/director, music videos and short films have brought awards recognition and strengthened her artistic fingerprint as a visionary, as she continues to impact and influence even greater audiences. Amplifying her unique perspective, Kayona lends her talents to bolster sports stories on the world's biggest stages, including the Super Bowl, NCAA Basketball Championship, and currently the Unrivaled Basketball League. Her most recent project, COACH QUINN, is a fictional drama/comedy about the NFL's (almost) first female head coach—crafted as a TV series but presented now as a novella. Kayona is the winner of various fellowships and grants from Roadmap Writers (screenwriting) to the Commission on Arts and Humanities for literature and media. In addition to her roles as a speaker and voice artist, Kayona is also the founder of the entertainment venture, Siingle, a 2024 Black Ambition mentee, a program co-founded by Pharrell Williams for rising entrepreneurs. Learn more about Kayona at kayonabrown.com.
Abby Cannon is a documentary filmmaker whose work explores themes of resilience and societal pressure, and is particularly dedicated to uplifting women's sports stories. She is currently pursuing her MA in Film and Media Production at American University, where she has had the opportunity to further develop her skillset, directing "In Her Court," a short documentary now streaming on WETA-PBS and making its way through the film festival circuit. As she finishes her studies and begins her professional career, Abby is dedicated to making films that prompt people to see the world and the people in it a little differently.
Ronnie Kay, Film & TV Director and Professor at NYU, returns to Tzuzamen to discuss her new sports documentary program at NYU, the first of its kind. Ronnie explains her reasoning for starting the department, highlighting the significant impact of sports on the American public and the growing popularity and influence of sports documentaries in the media industry. Ronnie is part of GALSNGEAR an organization that empowers women in the sports media industry. Ronnie is initiating a project to change the demographic in the film and television industry around the world, putting more women in positions of power.
