Open Source Day is a single-day campus event that takes a student from never having contributed to open source, to understanding exactly how to make their first contribution. It is not a lecture series — it is a hands-on day that ends with students having accounts created, tools installed, and a first task identified.

Organized by WikiClub Tech UIT in partnership with Google Developer Groups On Campus-UIT.

Agenda for the day:

  • 9:30 – 10:00 AM — Registrations
  • 10:00 – 10:30 AM — Welcome and introductions
  • 10:30 – 11:30 AM — Keynote: What is open-source, actually
  • 11:30 AM – 12:00 PM — Fun facts and tools of Wiki
  • 12:00 – 1:00 PM — Building with Google Developer Tools: hands-on session on Gemma, Google's family of lightweight open models, and MediaPipe, Google's framework for building on-device ML pipelines — including a live walkthrough of a simple build, alongside Wikimedia developer account creation and working with GitHub and Gerrit
  • 1:00 – 2:00 PM — Lunch (Pizza, supported by GDG)
  • 2:00 – 3:00 PM — Group project showcase
  • 3:00 – 4:00 PM — Q&A, closing, and photography

Google Developer Tools you'll work with:

  • Gemma — get hands-on with Google's open, lightweight AI models and see how they can be used to build real applications
  • MediaPipe — explore Google's toolkit for building fast, on-device machine learning pipelines
  • Guided, live walkthroughs so you leave having actually built something, not just watched a demo

By the end of the day, you'll have your accounts set up, your tools installed, and your first open-source task identified.
