Open Source Day - WikiClubTech Alvas
Details
Open Source Day is a single-day campus event that takes a student from never having contributed to open source, to understanding exactly how to make their first contribution. It's designed to give hands-on experience with open-source tools and technologies, and to get students collaborating, building, and contributing to the open-source community.
Organized by WikiClub Tech AIET at Alva's Institute of Engineering and Technology, MBA Seminar Hall.
Agenda for the day:
- 9:00 – 9:30 AM — Registrations
- 9:30 – 9:50 AM — Welcome and why we're here, with Envoy Sharvari Shetty
- 9:50 – 10:20 AM — Keynote: What is open source, actually
- 10:20 – 11:00 AM — Fun games: an image-regeneration prompt challenge, and a live bug-hunting round with progressively harder code snippets
- 11:00 AM – 12:45 PM — Building with Google Developer Tools: a guided introduction to Gemma and MediaPipe, alongside GitHub and Wikimedia developer account setup, leading into the open-source hands-on lab
- 12:45 – 1:30 PM — Lunch break
- 1:30 – 2:30 PM — Group project showcase, with faculty feedback
- 2:30 – 2:45 PM — Growing the community: how to get involved with the club and what's next
- 2:45 – 3:15 PM — Q&A, group photograph, and feedback form
Google Developer Tools you'll work with:
- Gemma — get hands-on with Google's open, lightweight AI models and see how they can be used to build real applications
- Kaggle— a data science and machine learning community platform where you can explore datasets, run notebooks, and take part in competitions. For Open Source Day, participants will use the Wikimedia Structured Wikipedia Dataset on Kaggle, working hands-on with real Wikipedia data to build and explore open-source project ideas.
- Guided, hands-on walkthroughs — work through real examples step by step, so you leave the day having actually built and explored something yourself, not just watched a demo.
By the end of the day, you'll have your accounts set up, your tools installed, and your first open-source task identified.
