WEEKLY HIKE - CITY HIKE
SOUTHWEST CENTER CITY + SCHUYLKILL RIVER BOARDWALK
(7.5 Miles | 150 Feet of Elevation)
DESCRIPTION
Join us for our weekly, weekday evening/night hike.
Every first weeknight of the month we leave the woods/nature behind us and take our weekly, weekday hike into a different part of the city. For the month of June, we will explore the Southwestern Part of Center City Philadelphia. This hike will include the neighborhoods of Rittenhouse Square, Fitler Square, Graduate Hospital, and the microneighborhood known over a century ago as the "Devil's Pocket". We will also spend some time walking along the beautiful Schuylkill River Boardwalk.
Throughout our hike we will see countless historical sites, several of which I'll stop for a few seconds to explain their cool, weird, scary, or dirty history. Our eyes will feast upon amazing and lovingly maintained homes, both big and small, many of which feature amazing architecture or architectural details. Our path will take us along the river along the STR and SRT Boardwalk where we can grab some cool photos of the skyline and riverfront. This is the "ritzy" part of downtown Philly, so expect to see some really cool stuff on almost every block.
OBSTACLES | SPECIAL NOTES
- This is a city hike - expect typical/normal "urban" obstacles such as broken and uneven sidewalks, pedestrian traffic, vehicular traffic, bicycle traffic, etc. Normal hiking gear works fine - though some people find sneakers or shoes with thicker soles easier for long distances on cement than their regular hiking boots.
- Most of the elevation will come as we go up and down on and off of the Schuylkill River Trail and Boardwalk. 90% or more of the hike is flat and our pace will be quick.
PACE | DISTANCE | ELEVATION
- PACE - About 3.5 mph on this (which is our usual for "city" hikes)
- Distance - Between 7 and 8 miles (7.5 is target)
- Elevation - 150 feet +/- (150 is target)

GEAR:
- Hiking boots/shoes, trail runners, or sneakers okay for this. Keep in mind whatever you wear should not be your "Sunday best" - aka something you mind getting wet, dirty, dusty, muddy, etc.
- Water
- Appropriate clothing - hats, rain jackets, etc. as needed
- A change of clothes for after (at your discretion)
- Headlamps not necessary for this.
- I also advise people bring hiking bags - either to help store stuff to keep your hands free and/or to help get you accustomed to using one
- Snacks (as you see fit)
- Beer or other drink for before the hike.
PARKING
- Free parking in the shopping center lot.
- Please do not leave valuables in or anything visible in your vehicle!
MEETING SPOT
- We will gather in the parking lot of the shopping center away from the stores and to the left as your drive in the main entrance at the stoplight. I'll post a comment with my outfit and upload a map with a pin in it to the event photos when I arrive.
BATHROOMS
- Bathrooms should be available at the start/end point BEFORE the hike in the grocery store. Not sure if it will be open when we're done.
- No other bathroom stops on the hike planned, but there's options if a lot of people need to go.
BREAKS
- No real "breaks" on the hike other than times to let people catch up, catch their breath and get some water and/or change gear & clothing a few times, for me to share some cool facts/history and to take some photos here and there.
AFTERWARDS
- Afterwards, if enough people are interested, we can go out nearby for a drink and/or some food
CANCELLATIONS
- I do not cancel hikes for inclement weather. It must be dangerous conditions during the hike or dangerous travel conditions to/from for me to cancel. If I ever do need to cancel or postpone I try to do so as early as possible.
- You may cancel at anytime up to and including the start time of the hike. Cancellations without contacting me after the start of an event counts as a no-show. More than 3 no-shows gets you removed from the group. If something happens, I get it, reach out and just tell me after. I've been there - hungover, busy, etc. Just be polite, and brief, if you miss and forget to cancel.
