Enjoy the wonder of nature on this fun and easy campout as you learn new skills and master some of the “old ways” for being self-sufficient and skilled in outdoor living!
Through hands-on experience, you will increase your knowledge of camp tool use and safety (draw knife, hand axe, and saws), knots and lashing, tents, tarps and even improvised shelters, campfire cooking, baking and stove use. We will use a map and compass to learn how to plan short hikes and what to do if you lose your way.
Basic wilderness first aid will be covered and Leave No Trace wilderness ethics and safety will be our mantra.
An evening campfire program and starlight hike will complete our day.
You can even make and take home your own hiking staff and a Campcraft manual and dutch oven dessert will be provided!
Bring your own food and camping gear, and dress for outdoor living and short hikes. A basic camping and hiking equipment list will be provided. Tent, sleeping bag, and other gear is available to rent on-site, if needed.
(Note: Flush toilets and hot showers are also available for your use!)
This course is presented by the non-profit Wilderness Institute and takes place at the Santa Fe Tree House Camp and Wilderness Preserve.
