Winter Solstice Night Hike

The longest nights of the year are a good time to experience a true adventure.
We’ll start after dark at the main lot and head out on the Beaver Dam Trail, then link into sections of the Bruce Trail and the Hilton Falls Side Trail. It’s a full 21km, half marathon distance, so it suits people who are comfortable moving at a steady pace for hours in the cold.
Everyone hikes by headlamp. Somewhere along the route we’ll find a quiet stretch, switch them all off, and give our eyes a few minutes to adjust. If the sky cooperates, there will be stars. If it doesn’t, you still get the silence of a winter forest at night.
We’ll also pass the falls and the old mill ruins on the way through. Bring a thermos, dress for standing still as well as moving, and expect to finish tired, cold-cheeked and very awake.
Check the trip plan for the details, including the meeting point, gear list, and timing for the day.

Highlights
Hiking After Dark: Your view shrinks to the beam of your headlamp, and you hear more than you see. It’s the same trail we hike by day, covered at night.
Half Marathon Distance: 21km with 201 m of elevation gain, in winter conditions and by headlamp.
Headlamps Off: A planned stop where the whole group switches off and waits for our eyes to adjust. Weather permitting, it’s the best chance on the route to see stars.

About Wilderness Union
Wilderness Union is deliberate about building an outdoors community that connects you to the life-changing magic of the outdoors and helps you find your people.
Members range from 20-40 years old. The group is a mix of GTA locals and newcomers to Toronto from within Canada and abroad.
Attendance numbers on Meetup don't reflect our actual event attendance - we typically have 15-20 community members at each event. Large enough that there's someone new to meet but small enough that it's not overwhelming!
