Coppicing in Ockwells Park
Details
On Sunday WMCV, and Wild Maidenhead will be continuing the hazel coppice cycle in Ockwells Park, Cox Green, Maidenhead.
Coppicing is a traditional method of woodland management whereby trees, most commonly hazels, are cut down to the ground on a cycle of about 8 years. New stems will grow from the "stool" and these provide material for bean poles, etc in the future. Only some of the hazels are coppiced each year and by doing this we create a more varied woodland habitat.
We will be working in the wood just past the first bridge where we coppiced hazel two years ago here: http://streetmap.co.uk/map?X=487929&Y=178596&A=Y&Z=115 What3words among.slug.movies. As before we will use the cut material to make “doughnuts” round the stools to protect the new shoots from grazing deer.
WMCV will be bringing saws, loppers and gloves.
There will be a tea break at 11:30am - tea, coffee and biscuits provided. WMCV will continue the task in the afternoon until about 3pm. If you's like to join us please bring some lunch.
Meet in the Ockwells Park car park at 10am here http://streetmap.co.uk/map?X=487845&Y=178777&A=Y&Z=115 postcode: SL6 3AA, What3Words: economies.slim.plant
