Bramble clearing and coppicing in Ockwells Park and Thriftwood
Details
On Sunday WMCV, and Wild Maidenhead will be clearing brambles to encourage the ground flora and coppicing hazel in Little Thriftwood in Ockwells Park and Thriftwood, Cox Green, Maidenhead.
Coppicing is a traditional method of woodland management whereby trees, most commonly hazels, are cut down to the ground on a cycle of about 8 years. New stems will grow from the "stool" and these provide material for bean poles, etc in the future. Only some of the hazels are coppiced each year and by doing this we create a more varied woodland habitat.
Little Thriftwood is the woodland on the southern border of Ockwells Park and Thriftwood next to the M4.
