Come check out the synchronized lightning bugs of Elkmont in the Great Smoky Mountains! This happens only a few on earth and only for a few days per year and only at a certain elevation. Each evening, the little critters start blinking in scintillating waves. People come from all over the world to see it and we're lucky to have it so close to us. There are flush toilets but no showers and no restaurants or shops are nearby. Plan on walking 3-5 miles per day while enjoying the daytime history (Elkmont is a modern ghost town) and nighttime light show deep in the forest.

Details for 2023:

This place has gotten VERY popular. I was able to get two group campsites near each other. We are going to limit this trip to 24 people and all tents must fit the 4 gravel pads - it will be tight. There are only 9 parking spots for all 24 people, so you must carpool and share tents.

CAMPGROUND RULES:

1. It's in the heart of bear country. Food storage regulations are strictly enforced and patrolled. All must be locked in a vehicle when not in immediate use. There is a hefty fine for leaving unattended food or cooking items even for just a moment. Items left out are confiscated. Yes, a WNG member has been fined in the past.
2. No Pets
3. "White" lighted flashlights and lanterns are highly discouraged and are not allowed at all in the bug viewing areas. Instead use red LED lights as these don't freak out the bugs.
4. You will not be able to enter the campground without a copy of your confirmation from recreation.gov. We will forward this out prior to the event. Please print it and bring it with you.
5. There is no cell service nor restaurants/stores etc nearby. The concession may be open in time for our visit, but please shop ahead and bring everything with you.
6. Alcohol is allowed at your campsite, please be responsible.
