Whether you’re a seasoned "lister" chasing spring migrants or a curious beginner hoping to spot your very first "spark bird," come join us for a morning of discovery at Tejas Camp!
Nestled along the scenic North San Gabriel River, this LCRA gem is a vital stopover for birds traveling the Central Flyway. Its well-protected riparian habitat and dense canopy provide the perfect "rest stop" for weary travelers, making it one of the best spots in the area to witness the magic of spring migration.

What We’ll Be Looking For
The river corridor at Tejas Camp acts as a natural highway for a dazzling variety of species. We’ll be keeping our eyes and ears peeled for:

  • Vibrant Warblers: From the sharp, yellow-and-gray contrast of the Nashville Warbler to the striking patterns of the Black-and-white, we’ll hunt for these "jewels of the trees" as they forage in the pecans and elms.
  • Flycatchers & Passerines: Watch for the acrobatic stunts of Scissor-tailed Flycatchers or listen for the distinctive whistles of Great Crested Flycatchers and Summer Tanagers.
  • River Residents: We might even catch a glimpse of a Belted Kingfisher patrolling the water or a Yellow-crowned Night-Heron stalking the shallows.

A Relaxed, Low-Impact Hike
Our route follows the gentle, soft-dirt trails that wind through the park. This is a low-impact hike designed for all fitness levels. We’ll move at a "birder’s pace"—slow and observant—to ensure everyone has time to get their binoculars on the action.

All Skill Levels Welcome
New to birding? Don't worry! This is a relaxed, educational walk. We’ll practice "birding by ear" and share tips on how to identify birds by their silhouette and behavior. For the veterans, this is a great chance to share your expertise and enjoy the camaraderie of the local birding community in a beautiful setting.

The Details
Please bring water, comfortable walking shoes, and your binoculars. Tejas Camp offers a peaceful escape where the sounds of the city are replaced by the songs of the San Gabriel.
Let’s head out and see what surprises the spring migration has in store for us!
