Whether you’re a seasoned "lister" eager to track down southbound travelers or a curious newcomer hoping to spot your first winter resident, join us for a morning of discovery along the Lake Creek Trail in Northwest Austin!

This hidden gem acts as a vital green artery for birds journeying down the Central Flyway. Thanks to its rich mix of riparian corridors and dense brush, it serves as a crucial refueling stop for weary migrants heading south for the winter.

What We’ll Be Looking For

Fall migration brings a subtle beauty and exciting identification challenges as many species swap their bright spring coats for subtle non-breeding or immature plumage:

• Subtle Warblers: Watch for early winter arrivals like the ubiquitous Yellow-rumped Warbler ("Butterbutts") as well as lingering migrants like the Orange-crowned and Nashville Warblers, flitting through the oaks in their softer, muted fall colors.
• Wintering Sparrows: Keep an eye on the low brush for arriving winter sparrows, such as the White-throated Sparrow and Lincoln’s Sparrow, seeking shelter and seeds along the trail.
• Acrobatic Flycatchers & Phoebes: Spot Eastern Phoebes perching on low branches and performing quick mid-air swoops as they stock up on insects before cooler weather sets in.
• Surprising Shorebirds: The creek's quiet edges often attract migrating Least Sandpipers or Spotted Sandpipers making brief pit stops along the water.

A Comfortable Path for All

The trails are almost entirely paved sidewalks, making this a low-impact, easy-access hike. You won’t need heavy hiking boots—just comfortable walking shoes and your favorite pair of binoculars. We will move at a "birder’s pace" (slow and observant) so everyone gets a clear look.

New to Birding?

Don't be intimidated! Fall plumage can be tricky even for experienced birders, making this a judgment-free zone. We’ll practice identifying key field marks, listening for call notes, and spotting movement in the brush.
