Mark Kostabi: Revisited
Curated by Helmut Schuster, and organized by Adam Sands

WEAM proudly presents Mark Kostabi: Revisited, a bold new exhibition of fourteen large-scale paintings created specifically for the museum by internationally acclaimed artist Mark Kostabi. This marks Kostabi’s second solo exhibition at WEAM, and a powerful return to the themes that have long defined his work: eroticism, sensuality, and the complexities of human connection in the digital age.

Living and working in Rome, Kostabi draws inspiration from the city’s classical reverence for beauty and the human form. His new collection spans a wide emotional and conceptual spectrum, from subtle, cerebral expressions of intimacy to ironic, contemporary commentaries on desire and technology.

Among the standout works is Sexting, a provocative depiction of a couple engaged in sex while simultaneously texting—an image that captures what Kostabi calls “the paradox of modern intimacy: a union physically present, yet divided by digital distraction.” Another painting portrays three nude women, seen from behind, taking a group selfie within a dreamlike, surreal environment– a celebration of erotic joy and a reflection on technology’s pervasive presence in our intimate lives.

A defining feature of Mark Kostabi: Revisited is the artist’s signature use of faceless figures, bodies rendered without identifiable features. This anonymity, Kostabi explains, “creates a universal language, transcending racial, national, and cultural boundaries.” It allows viewers to project themselves into the work, transforming eroticism from a private act into a shared human experience.

“Facelessness is also a gesture toward intimacy’s essential mystery,” says Kostabi. “It invites empathy rather than voyeurism, preserving the universality and poetry of desire.”

In Mark Kostabi: Revisited, the artist explores the ways technology reshapes human connection, sometimes deepening it, sometimes eroding it. The result is a collection that is at once sensual and cerebral, timeless and contemporary. Some works offer sharp social critique, while others revel in the sheer beauty and joy of erotic experience.
Kostabi: Revisited invites viewers into a visual dialogue that mirrors the contradictions of our digital era- connection and isolation, pleasure and detachment, individuality and universality.

The reception is free to attend and includes complimentary wine and beverages. Mark Kostabi: Revisited opens on December 1st and will remain on view through June 2026.
