Cheriton & Tichborne Circular – and red poppy fields

Join us for a beautiful and 9km (5.6mi) walk through the Hampshire countryside. This figure-of-eight route weaves through open fields, peaceful woodland, and alongside the crystal-clear waters of the River Itchen, offering a tranquil escape with a strong sense of history underfoot.
Along the way, we’ll pass through Tichborne Park and the ancient hamlet of Tichborne, a village with deep Saxon and Norman roots. Before the Norman Conquest, Tichborne encompassed lands that now include Cheriton and Beauworth. These lands were granted to the Bishops of Winchester by Saxon kings in the 10th century and later formed the Manor of Cheriton, based at Sevington Manor in Tichborne.

Historic Highlights:

• St Michael and All Angels Church (Cheriton) – A serene 11th-century church with striking stained-glass windows commemorating four young men from the parish who fell in WWI.
• St Andrew’s Church (Tichborne) – A Grade I listed church, founded in the mid-11th century, with deep ties to the Tichborne family, who held the estate from at least 1135. In 1621, King James I granted the family special rights to retain a private chapel here in gratitude for their loyalty.

If you’re in the mood for a refreshment, we can stop at the Flowerpots, a charming spot to relax few metres away from our car park.

Terrain: Mix of hiking path, fields and country lane towards the end of the walk. Make sure you are wearing appropriate footwear and clothing for this walk.

There will be a small charge of £2.00 per head per person for this walk on the day.

Dogs: Well-behaved dogs are allowed but must be kept on leads at all times.
