🍃 Owslebury and its wage riot - afternoon walk 🍂

A delightful circular 7 miles (11.3km) walk with a bit of everything. We will walk across beautiful open countryside, with field paths, farm tracks and quiet country lanes and with some gentle climbs with amazing views over the rolling downland.

The village of Owslebury, is the second highest village in Hampshire and has a history stretching back over a thousand years to 964 when King Edgar granted lands hereabouts to the Bishop of Winchester. However, its history probably goes back much further as the former Roman Road from Winchester (Venta Belgarum) to Porchester (Portus Magnus) on the south coast, passes through the village.
In 1830 Owslebury was at the centre of a riot. Impoverished agricultural workers moved from farm to farm demanding money in what became known as the Swing Riots. At Rosehill they attacked Lord Northesk's steward and wrecked a winnowing machine. John Boyes demanded farmers sign an agreement to pay the workers a fixed wage. Nine signed but the rioters were tried and Boyes deported to Australia, although he was later pardoned.

There will be a small charge of £2.00 per head per person for this walk on the day. Please bring a drink/snack for our stops a long the way. At the end of the walk for those who wish, there is a choice of a tea room or a pub.

Parking: Free at Shawford station, SO21 2AA

Terrain: Some ups and downs, tracks and paths which can be muddy, stiles and sections of country road. Make sure you are wearing appropriate footwear and clothing for this walk.

Optional drinks at the end of the walk for those who wish to stay, either at the Phoenix inn or The Bridge.

Dogs: Well-behaved dogs are allowed but must be kept on leads at all times.
