Chawton and Upper Farringdon Circular𓂃🪶

This is a circular walk (7.5km/4.6mi) from the tiny Hampshire village of Chawton, within the South Downs National Park. The walk starts from the former home of author Jane Austen which now houses a museum. The route passes through woodland and farmland to reach the nearby village of Upper Farringdon before returning along a disused railway line.
Along the way, we will see a few of the places that Jane enjoyed visiting when living in Chawton from 1809 to 1817.

In the village of Farringdon we can look out for the head stone of Mary Windebank murdered in 1758. This poor old lady was dragged from her four poster bed and brutally murdered. The money she kept hidden underneath was stolen. Her gravestone tells the whole story. The graveyard also has a 2000 year old yew trees.

Meet at 13:15 at Chawton Car Park. Ready to leave at 13:30.

There will be a small charge of £2.00 (cash) per head per person for this walk on the day. Please bring a drink/snack for our stops a long the way.

Terrain: The route has a few steady climbs and descents. There are a few kissing gates plus six stiles. The paths are mostly well made, but the woodland and field paths can be muddy after periods of wet weather. Make sure you are wearing appropriate footwear and clothing for this walk.

Optional drinks at the end of the walk for those who wish to stay, there is a choice of a tea room or a pub.

Dogs: Well-behaved dogs are allowed but must be kept on leads at all times.
