๐Ÿ›๏ธ ABOUT JACKSON PARK & THE NEW OBAMA PRESIDENTIAL CENTER

Jackson Park was originally designed in 1871 by legendary landscape architects Frederick Law Olmsted and Calvert Vaux, then dramatically reimagined in 1893 as the site of the World's Columbian Exposition. It remains one of Chicago's largest and most historically significant parks, with the Japanese garden, the Statue of the Republic, and the Museum of Science and Industry all standing as living legacies of the Fair. ๐ŸŒŠ๐Ÿ™๏ธ

And now, Jackson Park has a brand-new chapter: on June 19, 2026 โ€” Juneteenth โ€” the Obama Presidential Center officially opened to the public on a 19.3-acre campus, built on land originally shaped by Olmsted and Vaux themselves. The complex features four distinct buildings centered around a 225-foot-tall museum tower. At an estimated $850 million, it's the most ambitious presidential center ever built โ€” expected to draw a million visitors a year.

  • ๐ŸŒณ The Grounds
  • The 3.7 acres of outdoor space include a public plaza, walking trails, a fruit and vegetable garden, and over an acre of playground space. Visitors can enjoy the Women's Garden, the Wetland Walk, and a Chicago Public Library branch โ€” all free, open daily. Twenty-eight commissioned works of art are displayed throughout campus, 23 of which are free to view without a museum ticket.
  • ๐ŸŽŸ๏ธ The Museum
  • The museum itself is ticketed and was sold out for opening weekend โ€” so this will be a free leisurely walk through the public grounds and gardens, not a guided tour or museum visit. If anyone wants to come back another day for the full museum experience, the 8-story tower traces American milestones โ€” the Declaration of Independence, the end of slavery, the fight for equal rights โ€” before moving into Barack and Michelle Obama's own story. Highlights include a full-size Oval Office replica and the Sky Room, with panoramic views of Chicago's South and West Sides.
  • ๐ŸŒ… A Personal Homecoming
  • As Obama himself put it during the dedication: the center's location is meant as an acknowledgment of how much he owes to the people of Chicago and its surrounding neighborhoods โ€” fitting, given that this is where Michelle grew up and where Barack got his political start as a community organizer.

  • ๐Ÿงฉ Jackson Park
  • Olmsted and Vaux laid out this park in 1871. The World's Fair transformed it in 1893. And now, 133 years later, it's home to the newest and most ambitious presidential center in American history. Jackson Park keeps making history โ€” and we get to stroll through all of it, free, on the same afternoon. ๐ŸŒณ๐Ÿ›๏ธโœจ
