Going back for another look at Chicago’s newest landmark — and spending more time exploring the Obama Center!

We’re going back to the Obama Presidential Center to see what we missed last time and spend more time exploring the Center itself! Join us for a relaxed Friday afternoon discovering the 19-acre campus and the many public spaces that are free to enjoy without a museum ticket.

We’ll head inside the Center to explore the free public areas, including the 1st floor, gift shop, restaurant, basketball court, public library, and possibly the 8th-floor lookout tower, depending on availability.

🎟️ This is NOT a museum tour. The main museum galleries are ticketed and are not included.

If time allows, we may also walk over and explore more of Jackson Park!

## 🏛️ ABOUT JACKSON PARK & THE NEW OBAMA PRESIDENTIAL CENTER

Jackson Park was originally designed in 1871 by legendary landscape architects Frederick Law Olmsted and Calvert Vaux, then dramatically reimagined in 1893 as the site of the World's Columbian Exposition. It remains one of Chicago's largest and most historically significant parks, with the Japanese garden, the Statue of the Republic, and the Museum of Science and Industry all standing as living legacies of the Fair. 🌊🏙️

And now, Jackson Park has a brand-new chapter: on June 19, 2026 — Juneteenth — the Obama Presidential Center officially opened to the public on a 19.3-acre campus, built on land originally shaped by Olmsted and Vaux themselves.
The complex features four distinct buildings centered around a 225-foot-tall museum tower. At an estimated $850 million, it's the most ambitious presidential center ever built — expected to draw a million visitors a year.

### 🌳 The Grounds

The outdoor campus includes public plazas, walking trails, gardens, playground space and other areas open to visitors. The Women's Garden, Wetland Walk, Chicago Public Library branch and public art provide plenty to explore without purchasing a museum ticket.
Twenty-eight commissioned works of art are displayed throughout the campus, with many available to view without entering the ticketed museum.

### 🎟️ The Museum

The museum itself is ticketed, so we're skipping the paid museum galleries on this outing.

If you want the full museum experience, come back another day to explore the eight-story museum tower, which traces major moments in American history before moving into Barack and Michelle Obama's story. Highlights include a full-size Oval Office replica and the Sky Room, with panoramic views of Chicago's South and West Sides.

### 🌅 A Personal Homecoming

The Center's location is especially meaningful to Chicago. Michelle Obama grew up in the city's South Side, while Barack Obama began his political career in Chicago as a community organizer.
The Center's presence in Jackson Park creates a fascinating connection between Chicago's history, the 1893 World's Columbian Exposition and a new chapter in the city's story.

Olmsted and Vaux laid out this park in 1871. The World's Fair transformed it in 1893. And now, 133 years later, it is home to one of the newest and most ambitious presidential centers in American history.

Ample parking at the Chicago Park District MSI South Lot — accessed off Lake Shore Drive and Science Drive, immediately south of the Museum of Science and Industry. South Lot address: 1800 E. Columbia Drive.
⚠️ Enter from the EAST side only — the bridge from the west side is closed. Go behind the museum, past the Henry Crown Science Center lot, heading southeast toward Museum Shores Yacht Club.

🚫 Do NOT use MSI lots — they are expensive!

🅿️ Street parking also available a few blocks away — the further back you park, the cheaper!
