๐ŸŽถ ABOUT THE PRODUCTION
Holiday began as a 1928 Broadway play by Philip Barry, running 229 performances under director Arthur Hopkins. It was twice adapted into films, most famously the beloved 1938 screwball comedy starring Cary Grant & Katharine Hepburn. The story centers on a self-made young man who falls for a free-spirited woman โ€” only to find himself at odds with her wealthy, tradition-bound family.

This Goodman production is something genuinely rare โ€” a well-known title that has been truly, aggressively, and yet respectfully reimagined from the ground up by playwright Richard Greenberg (Take Me Out, Three Days of Rain). He kept Barry's original structure but rewrote nearly all the dialogue in his own voice โ€” full of wit, rhythm and sharp edges. The result feels both faithful and completely fresh.

๐ŸŽญ The Story: Up-from-nothing lawyer Johnny Case (Luigi Sottile) falls for Julia Seton (Molly Griggs) โ€” only to discover she comes from those Setons, one of New York's wealthiest old-money families. Johnny has a plan: earn his first real pile of cash, then take a "holiday" from work to figure out what truly makes him happy. He wants money โ€” just not too much.

Julia and her demanding father Edward (Jordan Lage) are baffled. But Julia's freer-spirited older sister Linda (Bryce Gangel) and her oft-intoxicated younger brother Ned (Wesley Taylor) are firmly on Johnny's side. A sparkling battle of values, class and the meaning of happiness ensues.

The dialogue is pure Greenberg โ€” witty, sophisticated, alive. There are even Broadway aspirations for this production, which raises a delicious question: does it qualify as a revival or an entirely new play? ๐ŸŽฌโœจ
