🎶 ABOUT THE PRODUCTION
Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom (1982), by August Wilson, is a cornerstone of his acclaimed American Century Cycle (also known as the Pittsburgh Cycle), a series of ten plays exploring the African American experience across each decade of the 20th century.

Set in a 1927 Chicago recording studio, the play captures a single afternoon as legendary blues singer Ma Rainey arrives late to a recording session with her band. While waiting, her musicians—each with their own ambitions, traumas, and perspectives—engage in raw, revealing conversations about race, religion, migration, music, and survival in a segregated America.

At the heart of the drama is a clash between Ma Rainey’s insistence on artistic control and dignity and the white producers’ focus on profit and control. Tensions escalate further through the character of Levee, an ambitious trumpeter whose dreams of success collide with harsh realities. The result is a powerful, slow-building exploration of systemic exploitation, generational trauma, and the cost of chasing opportunity in an unequal society.

Wilson uses the confined studio setting almost like a pressure cooker—layering humor, storytelling, and music with underlying resentment and pain—until it erupts in a shocking and unforgettable climax. The play also reflects the historical moment of the Great Migration, when many Black musicians brought Southern blues traditions to Northern cities like Chicago, only to face new forms of discrimination and commodification.

🏆 Premiered at the Eugene O'Neill Theater Center
🏆 Broadway debut (1984, Cort Theatre) won the New York Drama Critics’ Circle Award and earned a Tony Award nomination for Best Play
🎬 Adapted into a 2020 film starring Viola Davis and Chadwick Boseman

🎭 Widely regarded as one of Wilson’s most electrifying works, Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom is both an intimate character study and a searing commentary on art, power, and the Black experience in America—as relevant today as when it was first performed.
